Chapter 56

I didn’t get back home until four o’clock. There was a lot to like about my day. An hour later, Grayson called, much to my delight.

“I just wondered if you were having spaghetti for dinner tonight,” he joked. “I sure enjoyed it, as well as the dessert.” I chuckled at his dry humor.

“I could make it again if you like,” I teased back. “The kitchen is just as we left it. I just don’t understand how noodles managed to get everywhere they did.” Grayson joined me in laughter.

“My memory has no regrets,” he sweetly noted.

“So, seriously, Grayson, how were things when you returned home?”

“Very quiet. I snuck upstairs like a tardy teenager and got a few more hours of sleep.”

“She never said anything?”

“Not so far. Did you eventually move off the floor?”

“Not until Puff walked across my face!”

He chuckled. “Are you coming to the chamber breakfast meeting tomorrow at the Waterfront Grill?”

“Oh, I haven’t thought about it. Are you going?”

“Yes. I’d love to see you.”

“Will you save me a seat?”

“I’ll try. I really have a lot to do, but I feel I need to be there. I’m hoping they have spaghetti.”

I chuckled. I hung up with the comfort I’d see him again in twenty-four hours. I wasn’t hungry since I’d had lunch and too much strudel. I made a fire to enjoy, and then my phone rang. I looked and saw it was Carole.

“What a nice surprise!” I responded. “How is everything?”

“Good. How about you?”

“Pretty good. I just made a fire.”

“I just felt I needed to tell you what Jill has been sharing with me.”

“Oh. Is this about Austen?”

“Yes. He’s really depressed and seldom comes into the office according to her sources. I don’t think he’s recovering as he had hoped.”

“Well, his kind of recovery takes time. He’s never been a very patient person.”

“I just thought if he heard from you, it might cheer him up a bit.”

I paused. “I’ll give it some thought. Who knows what’s going on in his mind?”

“On a happier note, I got a call from the kitchen shop on the top of the hill, and they ordered more cookbooks. They told me they’re selling well as Christmas gifts. I’m thrilled people are buying them!”

“I’m happy for you, Carole. That shop does pretty well. How’s Linda?”

“She’s good. Her granddaughters keep her busy. She, too, has had an order or two of her jewelry.”

“Tell her hello for me.”

I hung up with a sad feeling in my gut. If I responded to Austen, he’d know it was pity on my part. Will he always be in my life in one way or another?” My cell rang again almost immediately after I’d hung up. I wondered it if was Carole calling back to tell me something she’d forgotten. It ended up being Ericka.

“Hi, Claire. I’m sorry it’s been so long since we’ve talked, but I’ve been preoccupied. Hey, what do you know about Cher and her boss? She seems quite taken with him. Do you know him? Is she getting herself in trouble?”

I had to chuckle to myself about her line of questioning.
